Meeting a fisherman

Meeting a fisherman!

Today a fisherman came to visit one of our kindergarten classes,. He was invited by Ms Romina Bugeja to speak about his profession and to present some of his tools to the children. He spoke about the fishing tackle that is used by fishermen when fishing.

He showed the children some hooks, lines, sinkers, floats, rods, reels, baits, lures, nets, gaffs, traps, waders and tackle boxes. He also demonstrated the use of the gear that is attached to the end of a fishing line such as swivels, sinkers, floats, split rings and wire, snaps, beads, spoons, blades, spinners and clevises to attach spinner blades to fishing lures. He also taught the children how to make simple and complex knots and how to attach hooks to them. I must say that the children really enjoyed the activity and are now looking forward to meeting the fisherman again for a practical session on fishing !!

Thank you to Mr John Bugeja for his excellent presentation. A big word of thanks also go to Ms Romina Bugeja who is always on the lookout for enhanced emerging teaching methodologies. Well done!!

Important note re: Second Term

IMPORTANT NOTE!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope you had a well-deserved break. Let’s hope for a better year ahead. As you may be already aware, school will resume online on Friday 7th January. School will re-open physically on Monday 10th January. All the respective teachers and LSEs have been informed and you will receive an invite on MS Teams for your child/ren to follow the lessons from home. All students are expected to follow these online lessons according to their time-table, and attendance will be taken. We look forward to welcoming your children back to school in a safe environment. Therefore, we remind you not to send your child/ren to school if he/she is sick. Also, it is important to send a medical certificate that states when your child is fit to attend school, in case he/she is sick, even after an absence of one day. No medical certificate is needed to start school following the winter break. Thank you for your cooperation, and kindly follow all Covid-19 procedures.

Best wishes to you and your families for the new year 2022.

Kind regards,

Mr Kenneth Busuttil

Head of School

SILVER AWARD

Once again, Mariam Albatool School has been presented with the Silver Award in the Book Champions Schools Awards organised by the National Literacy Agency within the Ministry of Education and Employment. The event was a whole school effort encouraging children to inculcate the love for books and of reading. The school administration would like to thank all educators participating in the event. Particular thanks go to Ms Doris Schembri and Ms Jessica Muscat for compiling and coordinating the project. A big well done to all!

Year 1 Activities

It is already mid-term and we have been 5 weeks at school! We have had many changes during this time however the children are coping well and the challenges are making them grow and develop into responsible and independent individuals.

We had several aims during this time at school. For English we learnt about Letter Sounds and how to blend them to make words. In Maths we did a lot of Number Work. In both the English and Maths Learning Times we used videos and interactive games as well as musical instruments to help us with our learning. For Personal and Social Development we worked on keeping safe, learning to listen to the teacher and follow instructions, being responsible, and managing ourselves.  In PE we included games with numbers and letter sounds as well as using animal masks the children created in our Art Learning Time. The children are also doing plenty of Finger Skills activities so that they develop stronger control of their pencils. This helps them to write properly and neatly.

All in all it has been a good and happy time. I am very pleased and proud of our children’s progress and development, and I am sure that it will only get better!!

The Rainbow project

The Rainbow Project

I trust that everyone is in good health and keeping safe! The children of Year 1 wanted to pass on the very important message that to keep our loved ones, our community and ourselves safe we need to STAY AT HOME. The video attached shows the lovely and colourful posters the children made as their contribution to this aim. They are all beautiful in a special and unique way and the children really deserve our praise!!  Well done Year 1, you make us proud!  J

      Message from Head of School

      Dear Parents,
Hope you and your families are keeping well.
This note is to inform you that the school will remain closed for this scholastic year to combat the spread of Covid-19. The plan right now is to have schools re-opened next September.
Educators at Mariam Albatool will continue delivering their lessons online, as is happening at present. This process will come to an end in June.
Kindly inform the teachers directly if you encounter any difficulties. Students are highly encouraged to do their work and revise regularly because as a general rule, children are not expected to repeat this scholastic year.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

      Kind regards,
      Mr Kenneth Busuttil

Whole School Action Plan in Mathematics

At Mariam Albatool we believe in making maths real by teaching it in the context of our children’s everyday lives. This is exactly what I observed today in Year 1 Ms Juanita’s class who together with Ms Sharone developed a hands-on activitiy which helped children to increase proficiency in number work. During the activity the children were encouraged to look for and identify number patterns which make up the number 5. It was a joy observing these young learners extending, correcting and creating number patterns. Well done to Ms Junaita, Ms Sharone and their your young learners.

      Guide-Dog Event

Today we had two special guests at school. We had the pleasure of having Mr Natalino Cristiano and his dog, Glen, for a visit. Mr Cristiano is blind and Glen is his guide-dog. Mr Cristiano gave an interesting and informative talk to the children about his experiences and about the importance and the work of his guide-dog. He spoke about the special training guide-dogs must do in order to be the ‘eyes’ of their owners. He also explained how we, the general public, need to react if we come across a guide-dog and its owner walking in the street. The rule is to NEVER touch the dog because the guide-dog is on duty doing its work!! Touching the dog might distract it from doing its job properly and the owner might get hurt. For this reason the children were not allowed to touch the guide-dog. The children were very interested with what they learnt and Mr Cristiano expertly answered many of their questions. To conclude the session Mr Cristiano and Glen demonstrated how they cross the street and how to get up and down the pavement. We were all impressed by the performance!! Special thanks also go to Mrs Cristiano who drove Mr Cristiano and Glen to school.

This event was planned to link to Science since we are currently exploring the Five Senses (Sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch). It also links to Maths as we have talked about Directions (left, right, forward). And finally, it links to PSD (Personal and Social Development) during which we learn to respect everyone, even people who are ‘different’.  Today’s event was definitely an enriching experience for all of us!!
