World Children’s Day

Assalamu Aleikum everyone!

In KG1A for World Children’s Day, we discussed the importance and the beauty that is Diversity. We discussed this with the aid of a book titled “Handa’s Surprise” by Eileene Browne. This book is basically about a young girl named Handa who lives in Kenya and would like to give a surprise to her friend Akeyo who lives in another village. The book shows us the different fruits Handa picks up for her friend as well as the different animals who pop up and each take a fruit along the way.

This book helped us understand the way different people from different cultures live which might be a bit different than us.

After the book was read, I explained to the children that each of us has different backgrounds. For example, some children come from Syria while others come from Libya. The thing that connects us together is that we all live in Malta. With the aid of visuals, the children got an idea on where their parents are from as well as where their peers are from.

For the main activity, together, we made a chart which portrays our differences in a positive light. Each child picked a colour they fancied and made their own hand-print which is also a representation of their uniqueness. Finally, each child was presented with a picture of their countries’ flag which they stuck underneath their hand-print. This showcased our beautiful diverse classroom and the children all felt a sense of pride and joy seeing the different colours and the different flags which represent their unique selves. #wcd2019

World Children’s Day

20th November, 2019.

World Children’s Day  was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and each year it is celebrated on the 20th of November. It is celebrated so as to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

World Children’s Day in KG 2R.

Today in KG 2R we remembered this special day and made the children aware of the children’s rights and their importance throughout these last 30 years.

Children were presented with a chart divided in 2 columns.  Child one showing a happy  child and child 2 showing a sad child. I asked the students how they think the children in the picture feel. After that the students were given different pictures. Some of the pictures are things that normally are enjoyed by children, while others make them sad.

The children had a turn each and discussed different photos and stated if the photo shows something that made them happy or sad and then they stuck the picture under the right column on the chart.

To make this day a memorable one, I prepared an activity that I was sure the children would love! Cupcakes decorations! All Children were given cupcakes, nutella and smarties to decorate and enjoy!#wcs2019

World Children’s Day

To celebrate World Children’s day, in Kg2C, first we had a story telling session using the book Handa’s Surprise.

Then I explained to the children in an age appropriate way about their basic rights such as right to have food, shelter, medicine, education, etc…

After we had a matching worksheet where the children had to match the animal with the fruit; as told in the story.

After that we made a fruit salad on a stick and to make it more fun, I provided the children with whipped cream to dip the fruits in it.#wcd2019.
