World Children’s Day

Assalamu Aleikum everyone!

In KG1A for World Children’s Day, we discussed the importance and the beauty that is Diversity. We discussed this with the aid of a book titled “Handa’s Surprise” by Eileene Browne. This book is basically about a young girl named Handa who lives in Kenya and would like to give a surprise to her friend Akeyo who lives in another village. The book shows us the different fruits Handa picks up for her friend as well as the different animals who pop up and each take a fruit along the way.

This book helped us understand the way different people from different cultures live which might be a bit different than us.

After the book was read, I explained to the children that each of us has different backgrounds. For example, some children come from Syria while others come from Libya. The thing that connects us together is that we all live in Malta. With the aid of visuals, the children got an idea on where their parents are from as well as where their peers are from.

For the main activity, together, we made a chart which portrays our differences in a positive light. Each child picked a colour they fancied and made their own hand-print which is also a representation of their uniqueness. Finally, each child was presented with a picture of their countries’ flag which they stuck underneath their hand-print. This showcased our beautiful diverse classroom and the children all felt a sense of pride and joy seeing the different colours and the different flags which represent their unique selves. #wcd2019

World Children’s Day

20th November, 2019.

World Children’s Day  was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and each year it is celebrated on the 20th of November. It is celebrated so as to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

World Children’s Day in KG 2R.

Today in KG 2R we remembered this special day and made the children aware of the children’s rights and their importance throughout these last 30 years.

Children were presented with a chart divided in 2 columns.  Child one showing a happy  child and child 2 showing a sad child. I asked the students how they think the children in the picture feel. After that the students were given different pictures. Some of the pictures are things that normally are enjoyed by children, while others make them sad.

The children had a turn each and discussed different photos and stated if the photo shows something that made them happy or sad and then they stuck the picture under the right column on the chart.

To make this day a memorable one, I prepared an activity that I was sure the children would love! Cupcakes decorations! All Children were given cupcakes, nutella and smarties to decorate and enjoy!#wcs2019

World Children’s Day

To celebrate World Children’s day, in Kg2C, first we had a story telling session using the book Handa’s Surprise.

Then I explained to the children in an age appropriate way about their basic rights such as right to have food, shelter, medicine, education, etc…

After we had a matching worksheet where the children had to match the animal with the fruit; as told in the story.

After that we made a fruit salad on a stick and to make it more fun, I provided the children with whipped cream to dip the fruits in it.#wcd2019.

Information Meeting

It was a pleasure for us to be holding an information meeting this morning at Mariam Albatool School. During the meeting a number important themes were discussed. Mr Brian Vassallo (Assistant Head of School spoke about the changes envisaged in the benchmark examination for the upcoming years. Also, access arrangements for children with special needs were discussed with parents. Then the session proceeded by another presentation by Mr Vassallo who spoke in detail about PIRLS (Progress in International Literacy Survey) -an international test being held next year. Later a questionnaire was distributed to parents as part of an ongoing evaluation which the school administration undergoes to determine the future goals of the school. The session proceeded by a very interesting presentation on the use of tablets by Ms Marthese Borda who is an Education Specialist on the subject. The meeting was coordinated by Ms Debbie Atanasio (Assistant Head of School). Mr Kenneth Busuttil (HoS) attended this informative meeting and answered any queries arising from the floor. Particular thanks go to the parents who expressed their satisfaction at the high level of commitment shown by all staff at Mariam Albatool School. A big well done to all !

Water Project

As part of the project ‘Water’, KG2R students had the opportunity to observe the operations a real fire truck. They listened to the sirenes, switched on the lights and spoke to a fire fighter on duty. They actively listened to him describing the nature of his job and observed his ability to use all the equipment at his disposition.
The pupils relished the opportunity to wear appropriate clothing and use water hoses diligently. This stimulated their curiosity and expressed their desire to know more. His dedication and patience were evident in the way he handled children’s queries.
The school administration would like to thank Mr Depasquale for sharing his expertise in away which children can understand. Particular thanks go to Ms Romina Bugeja for her initiative to provide a concrete experience for our young ones.
This activity formed part of an ongoing e-twinning project on water.

The Octopus Project

The Octopus Project

This week the children of Yr 1 learnt about the letter sound ‘o’. Our theme this month is about Animals and the animal we discussed this week was the octopus. We watched videos and learnt that an octopus has 3 hearts and it also has blue blood!! Octopuses come in different sizes and can change colours to hide away and not get eaten. The children learnt several new words that begin with the letter sound ‘o’. In Crafts we worked on our Octopus Project made out of coloured paper and paper plates. When doing this project the children learnt to listen carefully and to follow instructions. This is very important because the children will learn to pay attention and so they know what to do. This makes them responsible for their learning and independent too. Using the paint brushes, the scissors and glitter glues helps the children to have stronger muscles in their fingers. Strong muscles helps them when they write. The children were very much engaged in the activity as you can see from the photos that are attached. They were very focused on their work and all of them finished their task really well. They are very proud of their work which we displayed in class 🙂   Kindly share photos with your children ….they truly deserve to be praised!!!
